As I've been exploring more layering of textures and patterns in my new collage work, I've been hankering to try my hand at stencils. I thought I'd start out low tech, seeing what I can do quickly and cheaply with basic stencils cut on my Silhouette Cameo using materials on hand. I used one of my patterns inspired by Moroccan tile designs, converted into SVG cutting files (available here).
- Cut the stencils using basic card stock
- Use blue painters tape to hold them in place without tearing the paper
- Apply paint using a pouncer, making sure to push the paint completely into the cutout spaces. (I used Liquitex Basics acrylic paint)
- Remove the tape and stencils, and instant success!
I'm excited to use these in some projects I'm working on. I also tried using easy tack spray to hold down the stencil, which worked well, but left a tacky feel on the finished design that I didn't like. The cardstock seems perfect for using a few times and tossing, but doesn't seem like it will hold up super long for multiple uses, so I plan to experiment on cutting more stencils out of some different materials to see what I like best. I'll keep you posted!
